BTLN UPDATE




Congrats Tyson! This was Tyson's second Helmet of the Btln Season! It was Tyson and Luke at the end, both looking for their second Helmet of the Season. Tyson looked to be down on the second to last round, but he powered through for the win and the Helmet!

This week we played Glow in the Dark Basketball! It has been a while since we played GITD Basketball, nobody seemed to remember playing it before. (The last time we played GITD Basketball was February 2014.) The guys played for a while with two basketballs, giving them a chance to warm up and letting their eyes adjust to the dark. We removed a ball and played first team to three baskets wins. My team was up 2-0 early, making it look easy. Devin's team battled back to make the score 2-2. Dylan and Keegan were too much for my team, dominating the boards. Keegan eventually made the winning shot giving Devin's team the 3-2 victory!

In Bible study we looked at the Compassion of Jesus while he was on earth.

Matthew 9:35-36   Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

Matthew 15:32   Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”

Mark 1:40-42   A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

Mark 6:32-34   So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

Luke 7:11-15   Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”
Then he went up and touched the bier they were carrying him on, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

This is just a small sample of Jesus' compassion from the Gospels. Jesus was concerned about the spiritual state as well as the physical problems of all the people that he came into contact with. Jesus taught the people, fed them and healed the sick.

Hebrews 7:25   Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

Jesus is just as compassionate with us. He died for us and lives to make intercession for us!

Psalm 86:15   But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.



It is the 22nd Battalion Olympics next week!

WINSTON STANDINGS UPDATE




After ten weeks it was time for a Winston Standings Update! I am not sure that I have ever seen the standings so close this far into the Btln year! There are only four weeks left in the First Half of the Btln year and Phoenix has a one Helmet lead over the eight guys that are tied for second! If this keeps up, we are going to have an amazing finish to the Btln year! Congrats to all the Helmet winners and good luck to all!

BTLN UPDATE




Congrats Keegan! This was Keegan's first Helmet of the Btln season! The final two in Bulldog were two of our bigger guys in Btln! I'm not sure that I want to step in front of Keegan or Dylan when we are playing British Bulldog! On the last round, Keegan gained a few more yards than Dylan, winning the Yorkie and the Helmet!

This week at Btln we added the Mike 23 Balls to Murderball! I'm not sure if we will call it Murderball 23 or Murderball Defender, but it was a lot of fun! We used the Mike 23 balls only to block or to distract the other team. If you were hit with one of the Mike 23 balls you were still alive. As I anticipated, the game took a lot longer to play with the Mike 23 balls. In fact, we only played one game before we ran out of time! The one game must have taken about 20-25 minutes! Ben's team was able win the inaugural game of Murderball 23!


In Bible study our topic was "Victory in Jesus" or "Remembrance Day".

This week in Canada, we are remembering the soldiers that were willing to sacrifice there lives so that we could live in freedom.

John 15:13   Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Romans 5:7-8   Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus was also willing to lay his life down so that we could have freedom!

Romans 6:17-18   But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

1 Corinthians 15:54-57   When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”

 “Where, O death, is your victory?
    Where, O death, is your sting?”

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
 

Jesus has defeated sin and death! He has also given us victory over sin and death!

Colossians 2:13-15   When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.



Jesus has triumphed over powers, authorities, sin and death by the cross! He is the Victor!

BTLN UPDATE - MIKE 23






Congrats Dane! This was Dane's first Helmet of the Btln season! The final two were Dane and Jakob. Jakob already has one Helmet this year, so he had a bulls eye on his back. Both Dane and Jakob have been close to winning Bulldog in the last few weeks, this time it was Dane's turn to wear the Helmet!

Mike 23 is a game that we don't play very often and is always taking a back seat to original Mike. For some, Mike 23 is their favourite. Mike 23 has all the chaos of Mike, but with the lights on. I love how the scores rise and fall. The six mini games that we play in Mike 23 give the teams that are losing a chance to pick on the team that is in the lead. Dylan's team had a three point lead going into the last round, but lost on the last round because the other three teams picked on them.

Our Bible Study topic this week was "What should we know?"

Romans 16:19   Everyone has heard about your obedience, so I rejoice because of you; but I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.

1 Corinthians 14:20   Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.


In these passages, Paul tells us that we need to be wise about what is good and innocent like children when it comes to our knowledge of things that are evil.


Philippians 4:8   Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


This next passage sets the guidelines for us, as far as things that could be considered good. As I was reading this passage I realized that all of the traits listed here apply to God. Jesus is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy.


Philippians 3:7-9   But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.

Ephesians 1:17-21   I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
Philippians 3:10-11   I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.
Ephesians 3:16-19   I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
 
Knowing Christ and the love that he has for us is the most important thing that we could ever know! Everything else we could know or understand is like garbage in comparison to knowing Christ!

BTLN UPDATE - ROYAL RUMBLE 12






Congrats Phoenix! Phoenix is the 2016 Royal Rumble Champion! Twenty-nine guys competed in the twelfth Royal Rumble! There were twelve Lightweights (grades 7-9) and seventeen Heavyweights (grade 10-12)!

We always start the Royal Rumble with the Lightweights, and just like last year, the Lightweight Division was over very quickly! I guess the strength difference between grades 7-9 is greater than the strength difference between grades 10-12. Some of the smaller guys hardly touched the ring floor before they were going over the ropes! The final two in the Lightweight Division were Logan and Sam. Sam has made the final three two years in a row in the Lightweight Division, but this year it was Logan taking the Lightweight title! Congrats Logan!

In the Heavyweight Division there were two distinct teams battling each other. The best part was, that even though there were two teams, everyone was still having a good time. Dane, Keegan, Kaylon and Phoenix were working together. The other alliance had Dylan, Jakob, Tyson and Luke. Some of the other guys were wildcards, I was never sure who they were working with. The final three were Zach, Luke and Phoenix. As soon as we get down to the final three you know that two of the guys are going to work together to take out the third. Luke battled hard, but was not able to overcome Zach and Phoenix working together. I love the "Final Two-Ropes Down" tradition that we started at last years Royal Rumble. Everyone is watching and cheering for the Final Two, it is awesome! After the Heavyweight marathon, the Final Two is always going to be over quickly. There isn't any place to hide when the ropes are down. Phoenix was able to overpower Zach and push him out of the ring! I love how everyone rushes the ring after they know who the winner is.

Congrats to both Zach and Phoenix, it was an amazing finish!

BTLN PREVIEW - ROYAL RUMBLE 12



Royal Rumble 12 (Wrestling) is this Wednesday! There are so many big guys that could win the belt that I am not going to make any predictions! Can't wait for the final two! Ropes Down! Have fun and good luck to all!

Remember, there are two weight classes. The Lightweight division, grades 7-9 and The Heavyweight division, grades 10-12.

BTLN UPDATE




Congrats Deshawn! This was Deshawn's first Helmet of the Btln season! Jakob was there at the end with Deshawn, but Deshawn was not about to be denied the Helmet! Deshawn was almost down at least once earlier in the Bulldog, so it was quite remarkable that he was able to pull off the win.

For the second time this year we played Handball. I am convinced that we don't play Murderball and Handball enough in the Btln year, but I guess we need to mix it up to keep the guys on their toes. Early on, my team was destroying Ben's team. We jumped out to a 6-0 lead. I was considering trading a player until Isaac showed up. After Isaac joined the game, Ben's team completely turned the tables on us. Before we knew it, the score was 8-8! The score ballooned to 17-13 for Ben's team. We went to next goal wins, and the team that dominated got the result that they deserved. Ben's team getting the last goal!


In Bible study our topic was Thanksgiving. We can all learn to be more thankful people!

We are supposed to "give thanks in all circumstances" and "always be giving thanks to God for everything"! This shouldn't be hard, we have so much to be thankful for!

MIKE NIGHT UPDATE






Congrats Luke! This was Luke's first Helmet of the season! This was also Luke's second Helmet since he joined Btln. It is never easy to win the Helmet! Kaylon was there at the end with Luke battling for the Helmet, but came up a little short. Better luck next time Kaylon!

We had a surprise guest for Btln this week. It was Mike Hughes! Yes, it was the Mike that invented the game Mike! It was so epic to have Mike on Mike Night! The game has been slowly evolving, and just keeps getting better every time we play it! Ben's team had an early lead, but the other three teams caught up giving us the closest finish we have ever had! Mike's team and Devin's team tied for first 65-65! Ryley mentioned that we should have a bonus round in the Btln room between Mike and Devin. It sounded crazy, but why not? The guys all moved to one end of the room while Ryley flashed the room lights. I threw three balls and Mike came up with two of three giving his team the win in overtime! Mike winning it for team Mike on Mike Night!

This week Ryley offered to take a turn at the Bible Study! It is so good to have Alumni helping out!
Ryley had the boys read John 3:16 over several times.


John 3:16   For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.


Ryley asked several questions.

1) Who has God rescued?   A) "For God so loved the world"

2) What did God rescue us from?   A) "that whoever believes in him shall not perish"

3) What has he given us instead?   A) "but have eternal life"

4) How has he rescued us?   A) "He gave his only begotten Son"

5) What do we have to do to be recued?   A) "that whoever believes in him"

6) Why would he rescue us?   A) "For God so loved the world"

Ryley pointed out that there is so much packed into this one verse! Will we ever comprehend God's love that sent his one and only Son to pay for the sins of the world? Amazing love!

Ryley also read the parable of the lost son to illustrate God's love for us. (Luke 15:11-32)

BTLN UPDATE - SHIRT REVEAL NIGHT





Congrats Dylan! This was Dylan's first Helmet of the Btln Season! Dylan has been very close to winning the Helmet a few times already this year. He was not about to be denied this week!

This week was the reveal of the new Btln shirt! This years shirt is our 18th! I am so happy about how these turned out! Thanks to Bruce (Sergeant 1984), Laird and Ben (Sergeant 2006)(and anyone else who helped) for all their hard work! I think we have another winner!

We were going to play Mike this week, but I decided to wait a week. Instead of Mike we played Murderball for only the second time this year. Devin and Ben wanted to play against Ryley, so we made the teams so they could get their shots in on him. Ben and Devin's team was too strong the first game, beating Ryley's team easily. Mike switched teams and that was all that we needed to turn the tide. Ryley's team won the next two games, winning the series 2-1! We finished with a game of Fire-Fever-Flood that Uzzie was able to win over Ryley!


In Bible study our topic was, "God knows me".

Psalm 139:1-6
You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.


This passage in Psalms tells us that God has searched us, and that he knows us! It is amazing that God takes such an interest in us. Especially after he has seen all the garbage that we have hidden away. The passage tells us that he knows our thoughts, words and deeds. The amazing thing is that he still loves us!


Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
See if there is any offensive way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.


God knows our failures, but wants to help us fix our problems. We can ask God to show us where we are falling short of what he wants for us. After all, he knows us better than we know ourselves!


Psalm 33:13-15
From heaven the Lord looks down
    and sees all mankind;
from his dwelling place he watches
    all who live on earth—
he who forms the hearts of all,
    who considers everything they do.

BTLN UPDATE




Congrats Sergeant! Tyson has his first Helmet of the Btln Season! I can't remember for sure who was there at the end with Tyson, I'm thinking that it was Dane and Keegan, not sure though. Anyways, Tyson was the winner, giving us a four way tie for first place in the race for Winston!

This week we played Stickball. It is not quite the same without Ben and Noah, but the other guys really stepped it up on defense to make the game better than ever! It is fun to watch the three teams that are on defense work together to stop the fourth team that is on offense. The more we play Stickball the better it gets. As the defense gets better the scores are lower and closer. Phoenix 's team tied Jakob's team, forcing us into Rock, Paper, Scissors to find a winner. Dylan (Phoenix's team)defeated Luke (Jakob's team) giving Phoenix's team the win!

In Bible study our topic was "The wisdom of the world".

1 Corinthians 1:18-21   For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
    the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.
 
If the cross is foolishness to those that are perishing, then it follows that those of us that are saved by the cross will also look foolish to those that are perishing.
 
At first glance, it appears that God is against wisdom, but this is not true. The book of Proverbs is dedicated to wisdom. God is only against wisdom that denies his existence.

 
1 Corinthians 1:26-29   Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.
 
When I read the first verse of this passage I thought of Jesus' disciples. As far as we know, none of these men were educated. Again, not that an education is bad, but these men didn't have any credentials to speak of. Jesus could have picked any of the educated religious leaders, but he didn't. What is God looking for in his people? Jesus picked men like Nathanael.
 
John 1:47   When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.”
 
We must remember what the Lord told Samuel.
 
1 Samuel 16:7   But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
 
We only need to have our heart right with God and then we will be ready to serve.

BTLN UPDATE - SERGEANT INDUCTION NIGHT




Congrats to Tyson Tiller, the 29th Sergeant of Btln 3739! Tyson officially became Sergeant this Wednesday night at Btln! Ben Jepsen (2006) and Devin Chursinoff (2008) were there to present Tyson his Jersey! Tyson is the 17th Sergeant to receive his jersey.

Congrats also goes out to Phoenix! Phoenix has his first Helmet of the new Btln season! Dylan and Phoenix had the same forward progress on the last round, but Phoenix stayed up longer, taking the win! I don't know if I have ever seen a closer finish in British Bulldog! Congrats to both Phoenix and Dylan!

For the first time this year we played Handball. It was very intense from the beginning to the end! Ben's team had the early edge, but Devin's team battled back for a small lead. When we were nearing the end I wasn't sure what the score was, or who had the lead. To finish the game we went with one ball instead of two and also to "next goal wins". When we go to one ball and "next goal wins", the intensity definitely picks up! Both teams had their chances at the end, but Devin's team seemed to carry the play and ended up getting the winner!

In Bible study our topic was "The Passing of the Torch". As I was thinking about Tyson becoming the Sergeant this topic seemed to make a lot of sense.

As I was thinking about the passing of the torch I thought of Moses and Joshua (Deuteronomy 31:7-8, 23), David and Solomon (2 Kings 2:1-4), Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 19:19-21, 2 Kings 1-15) and Paul and Timothy. We focused in on Paul and Timothy. My thought was, what direct advice did Paul have for Timothy?

2 Timothy 2:22   Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Timothy 6:11-12   But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Paul tells Timothy to flee the evil desires of youth. Often we underestimate the sin in our lives and assume that we have it under control, but Paul tells us to flee from these evil desires! Next Paul gives Timothy a list of things that he should pursue. Righteousness, faith, love, peace, godliness, endurance and gentleness. Can you imagine what we would look like if we pursued these things? What a different place this world would be if we all pursued these things!

1 Timothy 4:7b-8   Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

We need to train ourselves to be godly. It is something that we all need to work on, and is also something that we will all benefit from in this life as well as in eternity!

1 Timothy 4:12   Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Even though Timothy was young, Paul tells him that he can still be an example to all believers! You are never too young to be a good example!

1 Timothy 4:15   Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.

Lastly, Paul tells Timothy to be diligent in all these things, so that everyone will see the spiritual gains that he has made! If we are training to be more godly, everyone should notice a difference in us!

BTLN UPDATE - POOL PARTY





Congrats Caleb! Caleb is the 2016 Btln Belly Flop Champion! I can't believe we have been doing the Belly Flop Competition for twelve years! There are two things required to have a Championship caliber Belly Flop. The first is big air and the second is a big slap. This year Tyson, Reese and Uzzie joined Caleb in the final round. Timing is everything, and Caleb was the one that was able to put it all together in the final round!

Before the Belly Flop the giant skidder tubes were the main attraction. The guys spent most of the evening trying stay on the tubes without being thrown off. I am so glad that we have the tubes instead of the Zorbs. The Zorbs weren't durable enough to survive a Btln Pool Party!

There was Menno on the BBQ and ice cream cake from DQ, chips and pop in the basement after we were done swimming.

BTLN PREVIEW - POOL PARTY!



Pool Party this week at Btln! There will be snacks (Ice cream cake from DQ, hot dogs, chips, and pop.) water football and of course the Belly Flop Competition!

BTLN UPDATE - FIRST NIGHT




The First Night Helmet winner is Jakob! Congrats Jakob! After winning Winston last year, Noah was the obvious choice to be in the middle for Bulldog. The last two left standing were Dylan and Jakob, with Jakob outlasting Dylan for the first Helmet of the year!

It was so good to have Ben and Noah one last time before they headed out to Norway with YWAM! They are gone but not forgotten! They will be missed!

Normally on First Night we play Murderball. Why would we mess with tradition? The first game was a marathon that my team was able to win. The next two games were both over early, Ben's team winning both. My team won the fourth game setting up the fifth and final game of the night. Despite Noah's best effort my team was unable to win the last game, losing to Ben 3-2!


In Bible study we focused on these first two passages.

1 Corinthians 9:16   For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

Paul was compelled to preach the gospel. What was it that compelled Paul to preach the gospel?

2 Corinthians 5:14-15   For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

It was Christ's love that compelled Paul! If we believe that Christ died for all then we should also be compelled to preach the gospel!

Colossians 4:2-6   Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

In this passage Paul gives us the formula for sharing the gospel. First we need to pray for open doors  to proclaim the gospel. Second we need to pray for wisdom to proclaim the gospel clearly. Next we are told to make the most of every opportunity. Lastly we are supposed to be gentle when we share the gospel.

2 Timothy 4:1-2   In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

At the end of Pauls' life, he gives Timothy (and everyone that has read this second letter to Timothy) this last challenge. Paul tells Timothy to always be ready to preach the word! Amazing final words from Paul to Timothy! Paul was compelled to preach to the very end of his life!
