BTLN UPDATE - LAST NIGHT OF 2017

For the twelfth year in a row we had an amazing "Last Night" to finish the Btln year! 50 guys showed up for the "Last Night" of 2017! We started the night with the Btln favourite, Murderball! Last year my team dominated "Last Night", winning 3-1! This year Ben's team dominated my team, winning 4-1!

After Murderball it was time to eat the nine foot party sub from Subway! It is amazing how fast all that food can disappear! In a little more than ten minutes the entire sub was gone! We also had cookies that I forgot to bring out until the night was over. I'm thinking Bonuts for "Last Night of 2018"!

Next we had the Btln Grad ceremony. Some years we have had as many as seven grads. This year Tyson Tiller was our only grad. Tyson did an amazing job leading Btln this year as our Sergeant! Tyson received his Bible and dog tag. It is always a privilege to give the grads their Bibles! We also gave Tyson the piece of paper with the English translation of the Hebrew Btln motto! Keeping with Btln tradition, Tyson ate the piece of paper after reading the motto.

We took the group picture and then it was time for Bulldog! There isn't anything quit like Bulldog on "Last Night". So many guys and so much extra energy! James was our final Helmet winner of the 2016/17 Btln Season! Congrats James!

This year Jakob Boschmann is the Winston Champion! Jakob is following in his brother's footsteps! (Lukas Boschmann, 2015) Congrats Jakob! You are a worthy Champion!

After closing the year with the Brigade Watchword the grade 11's and 12's went to the Station for the After Party! The After Party has always been a lot of fun, but this year the guys took it to a whole new level! It was so good to see all the guys having such an amazing time!

At the very end of the After Party Dylan Warwaruk finished the Memory Work! It is so much fun to watch the guys pick out their Medallion. I am so pumped that we will have Dylan with us at Creation this year! Congrats Dylan! Welcome to the world of gentlemen!

Thanks to all of the Alumni that came out to "Last Night"!

Special thanks to the leaders that helped out all year long!

THE LAST NIGHT AFTER PARTY

The Last Night After Party started in 2006 because Ben Jepsen didn't want the night to end. So Ben, Joe, Jason, Charlie and I all drove to Boston Pizza in Kelowna! I think we got home at around 3 in the morning! Now we go to the Station, which is obviously way easier.

All grade 11's, 12's and Alumni are invited to the "After Party" which is "After" "Last Night of Btln.

BTLN UPDATE - THE 12TH BTLN MASTERS

Congrats to Dylan Warwaruk! Dylan is the 12th Btln Masters Champion! Dylan was a distant third last year, and this year he is the Champion! I don't think that we have ever had such a close finish at the Btln Masters! There were only four strokes separating first from fourth! Next year we will have three Champions vying for the Green Jacket!

Twenty-eight guys packed into four vehicles and headed out to Cascade Par Three for the 12th Btln Masters! For the first time ever we played seven holes instead of nine so that we could be back to the church a little sooner. I think playing seven will keep the scores closer. We will definitely be doing that again next year.

THE 12TH BTLN MASTERS
Top five final scores
1) Dylan Warwaruk - 32
2) Isaac Holitzki - 33
3) Sam Anderson - 34
4) Riley Leighton - 35
5) Deshawn Dennis - 37

Special thanks to all the leaders that helped make this happen!

Thanks also to Gene and Vicki of Cascade Par three for hosting the 12th Btln Masters!

BTLN UPDATE - "POP N DOGS"

For the second week in a row we had a first time winner of the Helmet! Congrats Riley! It never gets old watching one of the guys win the Helmet for the first time! This was nearly four years in the making! Riley has been so close so many times that it has to feel great to win the Helmet!

As far back as I can remember, we have never had to cancel spring football at Btln, but this week our twenty year streak came to an end! We moved "Pop n Dogs" to the church. As it turns out, as long as we have Mennonite sausage it doesn't matter where we are! We had one of the best nights of year! Like Bear Rinehart from NEED TO BREATHE once said, "The nights that don't go as you planned are the ones that you will always remember".

We played Extreme Btln Basketball instead of football. What is extreme basketball? 25 guys and 2 basketballs! It was like a two team version of "American". Ben's team was down 16-6 early, but battled back to tie the game at 42-42! We decided that we would play to 50. Ben's team was not about to be denied the win after battling back from the early deficit, winning 50-46!

In our last Bible study of the year our topic was "Eternal Life".

John 6:66-69   From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”

I love Peter's response to Jesus' question, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life!" In other words, "What else is there?" "We have found the only thing that matters!"

Fortunately for us, we also have access to the words of eternal life!

John 3:16   For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

1 John 5:11-13   And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Romans 6:23   For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

If we believe in Jesus then we will receive God's gift of eternal life! What do we need to believe about Jesus to inherit eternal life?

Romans 10:9-10   If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

All we need to do is, believe that Jesus was raised from the dead and declare him as Lord in order to be saved! Jesus endured so much to make it easy for us! Jesus did the work, and all we need to do is believe so that we can have eternal life!

BTLN "POP N DOGS" AND SPRING FOOTBALL UPDATE

Congrats Logan! This was Logan's first Helmet ever! I checked the Btln Arkives to confirm. I was sure that Logan had won before, but this was actually his first Helmet ever! I am sorry that I didn't know this sooner. Congrats on your first Helmet Logan!

Spring Btln Football is one of the oldest Btln 3739 traditions. When spring comes around, the guys are tired of being inside and are happy to got to the field and play football.
My team had first possession and after a couple passes to Ryley we were in scoring position. Isaac (Neighbour) caught the first touchdown pass to give my team the 7-0 lead.
Ben's team promptly marched the ball down the field and Jakob caught the game tying touchdown, making the score 7-7.
Ben caught the 14-7 go ahead touchdown and I believe it was Keegan that intercepted me at the end of the game and ran the ball back for a touchdown to give Ben's team the 21-7 win!

This week Ben did the Bible study and the topic that he chose was "What a friend we have in Jesus".

Romans 5:6-8   You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans tells us that Jesus was willing to die for us while we were powerless, ungodly and sinners! We were not family, friends or even acquaintances to Jesus, but he was still willing to die for us!

Matthew 27:31-35    After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him. As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

Matthew 27:38-44   Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Matthew 27:45-53   From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

Romans 3:23-24   For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

The Jews all needed saving, and instead of running to Christ for help they mocked, insulted and crucified him. Are we are not any different though? We all need saving as well! Will we run to Jesus for the help that only he can give? Jesus is the friend that was willing to die for us! We will not find another friend like him!
