BTLN UPDATE - SERGEANT INDUCTION NIGHT

Congrats to Tyson Tiller, the 29th Sergeant of Btln 3739! Tyson officially became Sergeant this Wednesday night at Btln! Ben Jepsen (2006) and Devin Chursinoff (2008) were there to present Tyson his Jersey! Tyson is the 17th Sergeant to receive his jersey.

Congrats also goes out to Phoenix! Phoenix has his first Helmet of the new Btln season! Dylan and Phoenix had the same forward progress on the last round, but Phoenix stayed up longer, taking the win! I don't know if I have ever seen a closer finish in British Bulldog! Congrats to both Phoenix and Dylan!

For the first time this year we played Handball. It was very intense from the beginning to the end! Ben's team had the early edge, but Devin's team battled back for a small lead. When we were nearing the end I wasn't sure what the score was, or who had the lead. To finish the game we went with one ball instead of two and also to "next goal wins". When we go to one ball and "next goal wins", the intensity definitely picks up! Both teams had their chances at the end, but Devin's team seemed to carry the play and ended up getting the winner!

In Bible study our topic was "The Passing of the Torch". As I was thinking about Tyson becoming the Sergeant this topic seemed to make a lot of sense.

As I was thinking about the passing of the torch I thought of Moses and Joshua (Deuteronomy 31:7-8, 23), David and Solomon (2 Kings 2:1-4), Elijah and Elisha (1 Kings 19:19-21, 2 Kings 1-15) and Paul and Timothy. We focused in on Paul and Timothy. My thought was, what direct advice did Paul have for Timothy?

2 Timothy 2:22   Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Timothy 6:11-12   But you, man of God, pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Paul tells Timothy to flee the evil desires of youth. Often we underestimate the sin in our lives and assume that we have it under control, but Paul tells us to flee from these evil desires! Next Paul gives Timothy a list of things that he should pursue. Righteousness, faith, love, peace, godliness, endurance and gentleness. Can you imagine what we would look like if we pursued these things? What a different place this world would be if we all pursued these things!

1 Timothy 4:7b-8   Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

We need to train ourselves to be godly. It is something that we all need to work on, and is also something that we will all benefit from in this life as well as in eternity!

1 Timothy 4:12   Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

Even though Timothy was young, Paul tells him that he can still be an example to all believers! You are never too young to be a good example!

1 Timothy 4:15   Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.

Lastly, Paul tells Timothy to be diligent in all these things, so that everyone will see the spiritual gains that he has made! If we are training to be more godly, everyone should notice a difference in us!

BTLN UPDATE - POOL PARTY

Congrats Caleb! Caleb is the 2016 Btln Belly Flop Champion! I can't believe we have been doing the Belly Flop Competition for twelve years! There are two things required to have a Championship caliber Belly Flop. The first is big air and the second is a big slap. This year Tyson, Reese and Uzzie joined Caleb in the final round. Timing is everything, and Caleb was the one that was able to put it all together in the final round!

Before the Belly Flop the giant skidder tubes were the main attraction. The guys spent most of the evening trying stay on the tubes without being thrown off. I am so glad that we have the tubes instead of the Zorbs. The Zorbs weren't durable enough to survive a Btln Pool Party!

There was Menno on the BBQ and ice cream cake from DQ, chips and pop in the basement after we were done swimming.

BTLN UPDATE - FIRST NIGHT

The First Night Helmet winner is Jakob! Congrats Jakob! After winning Winston last year, Noah was the obvious choice to be in the middle for Bulldog. The last two left standing were Dylan and Jakob, with Jakob outlasting Dylan for the first Helmet of the year!

It was so good to have Ben and Noah one last time before they headed out to Norway with YWAM! They are gone but not forgotten! They will be missed!

Normally on First Night we play Murderball. Why would we mess with tradition? The first game was a marathon that my team was able to win. The next two games were both over early, Ben's team winning both. My team won the fourth game setting up the fifth and final game of the night. Despite Noah's best effort my team was unable to win the last game, losing to Ben 3-2!

In Bible study we focused on these first two passages.

1 Corinthians 9:16   For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

Paul was compelled to preach the gospel. What was it that compelled Paul to preach the gospel?

2 Corinthians 5:14-15   For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again.

It was Christ's love that compelled Paul! If we believe that Christ died for all then we should also be compelled to preach the gospel!

Colossians 4:2-6   Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

In this passage Paul gives us the formula for sharing the gospel. First we need to pray for open doors  to proclaim the gospel. Second we need to pray for wisdom to proclaim the gospel clearly. Next we are told to make the most of every opportunity. Lastly we are supposed to be gentle when we share the gospel.

2 Timothy 4:1-2   In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.

At the end of Pauls' life, he gives Timothy (and everyone that has read this second letter to Timothy) this last challenge. Paul tells Timothy to always be ready to preach the word! Amazing final words from Paul to Timothy! Paul was compelled to preach to the very end of his life!

Pool Party next week! Sept.14th (6:30-8:30 pm) at Abe's pool! (6715 18th street)
