That's right, it is time again for Btln Football! Can't believe that it is that time of year again! Rumor has it that Cody Harp will be in attendance! Btln, Football and Menno, doesn't get better than that!

BTLN UPDATE


 

Congrats Noah! Second Helmet of the Btln Season for Noah! It seems like the Dynamic Duo are always doing everything together! Ben won the Helmet last week, so Noah had to win it this week. Is it Ben's turn next week? Anyways, big win for Noah this week!

We played Handball and somehow the teams ended up being a little lopsided. Jason's team was really dominating early. We reset and played first to two goals. Harley scored first for my team, giving us the early 1-0 lead. Jason's team tied it up and then Jason scored the game winner on a spin/backward bounce shot! It was impressive! The Dynamic Duo were unable to keep the ball out of the net. I guess they were saving it for Bulldog. ;)

In Bible study we looked at the Transfiguration. (Matt. 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-10, Luke 9:28-36)

Matthew 17:1-9  After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Why did God the Father want to honor Jesus in this way? I think that God wanted to encourage the disciples. Seeing Jesus with two of the greatest prophets in Israel's history would have been amazing for Peter, James and John. Hearing God the Father speak out of the cloud like he did at Mount Sinai would have made these men think back to Israel's past. Jesus power and majesty were both mostly hidden while he was on earth. Now these men were seeing Jesus as he really is! This moment had a lasting impression for Peter.

2 Peter 1:16-18  For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.

We can be encouraged like Peter, James and John! We will also get to see Jesus in his Majestic Glory when we get to heaven! We can also be thankful that he humbled himself! Dying for our sins on the cross!

Philippians 2:5-11  In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to deatheven death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

WINSTON UPDATE

 
 
With six weeks left in the 2013/2014 Btln Season it was time for a Winston Update! It looks like it is going to be either Max or John that will win Winston this year! We will not likely end in a tie like we did last year. Luke is still mathematically in the race for Winston, but he would have to win three out of the final six Helmets to win it all. (That would be amazing!)

BTLN UPDATE



 
 
Congrats Ben! Second Helmet of the season for Ben! It was Noah and Ben at the end. (They didn't like my Sedin comparison, so how about Maddux and Glavine or maybe Ruth and Gehrig or Mantle and Maris?) The Dynamic Duo will more than likely finish first and second many more times in the future!
 
This week we played Murderball and my team was taking it to Devin's team! They didn't win a game until we gave them both Max and Jonathan! The final score was 3-3 when we ran out of time. So good to play Murderball again! Four weeks is too long between games!
 
How about those pics of the guys studying God's Word? So exciting to have all these guys reading and studying God's Word! This week in Bible study we looked at Daniel.
 
Most Christians are striving to be more consistent in their daily walk. Daniel is a great example of consistent godly living. When Daniel was young (around 15 years old) he was taken away from his family and brought to a godless foreign country. Daniel could have justified a godless lifestyle but instead he chose to continue to follow God!
 
Daniel 1:1-20  In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babylonia and put in the treasure house of his god.
Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.
The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.
Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.
But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.
To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.
At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.


Daniel was willing to live according God's Word, even if it meant going against the kings wishes! Sixty five years later when Daniel was eighty he still chose to follow God rather than men! This time he was thrown into the lions den!


Daniel 6:10  Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.


Daniel was thrown into the lions den for praying to God! This was also the reason why Daniel was able to live such a consistent godly life! If only we would pray and dwell on God's Word three times a day like Daniel! God's Word would begin to permeate our lives and we would become consistent like Daniel!

BTLN UPDATE



 
Congrats Jonathan! Second Helmet of the season for Jon! It was Luke and Jon at the end but Jon would not be denied!
 
This week we played Stickball! I love Stickball, not sure why. Probably because it is always unpredictable. There are always funny moments when we play Stickball. Alex and Dion are always good for one of these funny moments. I never actually gave the final scores, so here they are.

This week in Bible study we had Zach leading us through the story Naaman.
 
2 Kings 5:1-14  Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the Lord had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy.
Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. She said to her mistress, “If only my master would see the prophet who is in Samaria! He would cure him of his leprosy.”
Naaman went to his master and told him what the girl from Israel had said. “By all means, go,” the king of Aram replied. “I will send a letter to the king of Israel.” So Naaman left, taking with him ten talents of silver, six thousand shekels of gold and ten sets of clothing. The letter that he took to the king of Israel read: “With this letter I am sending my servant Naaman to you so that you may cure him of his leprosy.”
As soon as the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his robes and said, “Am I God? Can I kill and bring back to life? Why does this fellow send someone to me to be cured of his leprosy? See how he is trying to pick a quarrel with me!”
When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his robes, he sent him this message: “Why have you torn your robes? Have the man come to me and he will know that there is a prophet in Israel.” So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
But Naaman went away angry and said, “I thought that he would surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the spot and cure me of my leprosy. Are not Abana and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? Couldn’t I wash in them and be cleansed?” So he turned and went off in a rage.
Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy.


Zach pointed out that Naaman was a proud man just like the rest of us. Naaman did not deserve to be healed from his leprosy, but when he humbled himself and accepted God's terms he was healed! In the same way, we do not deserve to be saved from our sin, but God does save us if we will humble ourselves and accept his forgiveness! Notice how Namaan was completely cleansed! His skin was like the skin of a small child! When God cleanses us from our sin we are completely cleansed!

It is March already and I am four days late with this post! Two grads this month, can't believe that we are nearing the end! It feel like Josh has been around for forever (In a good way!) and David has become a good friend! We have two more months to make good memories and hopefully more in the years to come!

BTLN UPDATE - BRIGADE NIGHT 2014

 

Congrats to Jake, the 2014 Btln Ping Pong Champion! Luke B. was a worthy opponent, winning the first game! Jake battled back winning the next three games and the best of five series 3-1! The games were all close and could have went either way, but in the end it was Jake raising the trophy for the second straight year! Can Jake tie or beat Calvin Peters record of four wins in a row? Can't wait to find out!
 
Earlier in the night Max, Jonathan and Luke M. all recited scripture on the stage! So proud of these guys! It's never easy to get up on the stage and recite Scripture.

BTLN UPDATE - THE G.I.T.D. TRIFECTA!


 
Congrats James! This was James first Helmet ever! I am predicting many more in the future for James! At the end it was Gabe and James, with James outlasting Gabe for the win!
 
This week we tried for the first time "Glow in the dark Trifecta"! I am always looking to switch things up, so this week we tried the G.I.T.D. Trifecta! I am never sure how these things will turn out, but this time I think we have a winner! The G.I.T.D. Trifecta is visually awesome! (It is a lot like S*A*M) With glow sticks on the net and marking the key we started with Handball. Ben's team destroyed my team beating us 7-3! Next we played glow in the dark Basketball! My team returned the favor, beating Ben's team 5 baskets to 2! The final leg of the Trifecta was Fire, Fever, Flood! The team with the last man standing would win! In the end it came down to Jason (For my team.) and Jake! (For Ben's team.) Jason took the win giving my team the win in the inaugural edition of the G.I.T.D. Trifecta! So stoked, can't wait to try this again!
 
In Bible study we continued our strange stories from the Bible series with the story of Samson.
 
Judges 13:2-5  A certain man of Zorah, named Manoah, from the clan of the Danites, had a wife who was childless, unable to give birth. The angel of the Lord appeared to her and said, “You are barren and childless, but you are going to become pregnant and give birth to a son. Now see to it that you drink no wine or other fermented drink and that you do not eat anything unclean. You will become pregnant and have a son whose head is never to be touched by a razor because the boy is to be a Nazirite, dedicated to God from the womb. He will take the lead in delivering Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”
 
God had a special plan for Samson's life. God also has amazing things planned for our lives! God will not give us superhuman strength but he has better things planned for us!
 
Judges 14:5-6  Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat. But he told neither his father nor his mother what he had done.
 
Judges 15:3-5  Samson said to them, “This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines; I will really harm them.” So he went out and caught three hundred foxes and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch to every pair of tails, lit the torches and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves.
 
Judges 15:14-17  As he approached Lehi, the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. The ropes on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands. Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men. Then Samson said, “With a donkey’s jawbone I have made donkeys of them. With a donkey’s jawbone I have killed a thousand men.” When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was called Ramath Lehi.
 
Samson was able to tear apart a lion, catch 300 foxes and kill a thousand men with the jawbone of a donkey, but was unable to pick a godly woman!
 
Judges 16:15-21  Then she said to him, “How can you say, ‘I love you,’ when you won’t confide in me? This is the third time you have made a fool of me and haven’t told me the secret of your great strength.With such nagging she prodded him day after day until he was sick to death of it.
So he told her everything. “No razor has ever been used on my head,” he said, “because I have been a Nazirite dedicated to God from my mother’s womb. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as any other man.”
When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, “Come back once more; he has told me everything.” So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him.
Then she called, “Samson, the Philistines are upon you!”
He awoke from his sleep and thought, “I’ll go out as before and shake myself free.” But he did not know that the Lord had left him.
Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison.


Judges 16:26-30  Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.” Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.
 
What a tragic end for Samson! God continued to use Samson even though he didn't make the best choices. If Samson had more closely followed God's plan for his life how much more could he have accomplished? The same is true for us! The more closely we follow God's plan for our lives the more God will be able to do through us!

80,000 VISITORS FOR BATTALION HEADQUARTERS 3739!


 
The Blog has surpassed 80,000 Visitors! Congrats to Dylan, the winner of the 16GB iPod Nano! Three guys saw 80,000 and had proof. Landon Warwaruk, Tyson Tiller and of course Dylan Warwaruk. (Wednesday was a night for brothers! The Boschmann brothers will meet in the Ping Pong Final, Dylan and Landon had their names in the draw for the iPod and Landon won Bulldog!) Anyways, thanks to everyone who visits the blog! Can't wait until 90,000!

BTLN UPDATE - THE 19TH ANNUAL BTLN PING PONG TOURNEY




 
Congrats to the Boschmann family! Never before have we ever had brothers playing each other in the Ping Pong Finals! Jake has a chance to repeat and Luke is looking for his first Ping Pong Championship! So excited for the final! Question is, who are mom and dad going to cheer for? Congrats to both Luke and Jake!
 
This year 31 guys competed in the tourney! (Only one empty spot on the chart!) In a one game knockout tourney you never know who will win or what will happen.(Just look at last years results.) I guess that is what I like best about the Ping Pong Tourney. Although this year there weren't any big surprises.
 
Including Jake (2013) we had four former Ping Pong Champions in attendance at the tourney! Ryley Heppner (2001), Parker Steadman (2006, 2009, 2010) and Zane Lawson (2011) all showed up to watch! So stoked to have the Alumni show their support for Btln!
 
After Ping Pong we decided that we should play Bulldog! Usually after Ping Pong we don't play Bulldog, but this year there is a week between the Tourney and the finals so it seemed like the right thing to do! Besides, when is it ever not the right thing to do? With leaders, there had to be 40 guys playing Bulldog! It was intense, even more than usual! Landon outlasted everyone taking the win! This was Landon's second Helmet of the season! Congrats Landon!
 
Thanks to all the leaders that helped run the Tourney! Couldn't do it without you!
 
Can't wait for the Ping Pong finals! Sunday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m.!

BTLN UPDATE



 
Congrats Ben! This is Ben's second Helmet ever. (And first Bulldog win!) Ben's first Helmet was on his first night at Btln! (I'm sure that is a Btln record!) Ben won the Belly Flop on his first night! What a way to start your Btln career!
 
This week we welcomed back Ryley (for the rest of the Btln year!), GeRRald (For one night.) and Austin (Not sure how long Austin will be around.) What a difference to have these guys back at Btln! We are so happy to have these guys back, even if it's only for one night!
 
GeRRald wanted to play Murderball, so we played Murderball! After two games we were tied 1-1. My team had Ben's team down early in the third game, but we were unable to finish them off. They battled back, taking the third game, and finished us off in the fourth, beating us 3-1!
 
In Bible study we had Ben leading us through another strange story from the Bible. The best part about these stories, is that they are real! Real people and the one true God!
 
Not long after God had rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt they began to grumble against God.
 
Numbers 11:4-6  The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had meat to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!
 
It is sad how fast the Israelites forgot all the good things God has done for them! (Are we any different?) God had saved them from Egypt, was going to take them to their own land and in the mean time was miraculously providing food that had all the vitamins and nutrients that they needed!
 
Numbers 11:13-15  Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
 
Even Moses begins to forget how God had provided for the Israelites. Moses is trying to do things on his own instead of leaning on God!
 
Numbers 11:18-20  “Tell the people: ‘Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow, when you will eat meat. The Lord heard you when you wailed, “If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!” Now the Lord will give you meat, and you will eat it. You will not eat it for just one day, or two days, or five, ten or twenty days, but for a whole month—until it comes out of your nostrils and you loathe it—because you have rejected the Lord, who is among you, and have wailed before him, saying, “Why did we ever leave Egypt?”’”
 
God gave the Israelites the meat they desired, and in larger portions than they could have ever imagined! We need to remember that God knows best! (Careful what you pray for!)
 
We also need to remember all the good things God has done for us in the past, and believe that he can do more than we can ask or imagine in our future!
 
Ephesians 3:20-21  Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Congrats John Van! John is the Winterslam Champion! John is now the reigning Btln Olympic and Winterslam Champion! That is a very good year!
 
There were 32 boys at Winterslam 9! 22 Lightweights and 8 Heavyweights! (2 guys couldn't compete.) In the Lightweight Division we had 6 bouts in the first round! The 6 winners moved into the second round. After two bouts in the second round we were down to 2 guys! Tyson and Jake both battled hard, but in the end it was Jake winning the Lightweight Division! Congrats Jake! Could Jake be a future Winterslam Champion?

The Heavyweight Division had two rounds. In the first round, eight men battled in two bouts for the right to be one of the final two! Max and John were the winners of the two bouts in the first round, setting up a clash of the titans! Both guys fought hard, it wasn't going to be easy for either of them.
In the end John outlasted Max, giving John the Winterslam Title and the Belt! Congrats to both Max and John! Both competed very hard!

This week is Winterslam 9! (Can't believe that it is already nine years!) Only one repeat Champion in eight years. Who will take home the belt this year?

BTLN UPDATE

 
Congrats Max! This is Max's fifth Helmet of the Btln Season! There are eleven nights left in the 2013/14 Btln Season. Can Max be caught? Will Max tie or beat Zach's record of eight Helmets in one Btln Season? Can't wait to find out!
 
We played the Btln Trifecta for the first time this year! We started with Murderball. It was a best of five, my team winning three straight! The second leg of the Trifecta was Handball. We were playing to seven and my team had an early 4-0 lead! But Ben's team stormed back winning 7-5! We finished with Extreme Bulldog. My team had John Van in the middle and Ben's team had Nathan Klassen. In the end it was Jake Hachey for my team that outlasted everyone, giving my team the 2-1 victory in the Btln Trifecta! Love the Trifecta! I wish we could play it more often!
 
In Bible study we continued our miniseries "Strange and weird stories from the Bible". This week we looked at Balaam and his talking donkey. (Numbers 22:1-41, Numbers 23:1-12)
 
Numbers 22:2-6  Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites.
The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, “This horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River, in his native land. Balak said:
“A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”
 
King Balak heard how God had helped the Israelites. Balak realized that he needed supernatural help, so he asks Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balaam wanted to curse the Israelites because of greed, but he knew that he couldn't curse the Israelites if God wouldn't let him.

Joshua 24:10  But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand.

Deuteronomy 23:5  However, the Lord your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the Lord your God loves you.

In the end Balaam blesses the Israelites, but not before he was rebuked by his donkey.

2 Peter 2:15-16  They have left the straight way and wandered off to follow the way of Balaam son of Bezer, who loved the wages of wickedness. But he was rebuked for his wrongdoing by a donkey—an animal without speech—who spoke with a human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.

If God would not let the Israelites be cursed then we can be sure that he will do the same for us! But He (Jesus) lives to bless us!


Romans 8:31  If God is for us, who can be against us?

Ephesians 1:3  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
