BTLN MEMORY WORK LEGENDS

Seven guys completed the Memory Work at Btln this year! That is a new Btln record! I thought it would be interesting to see all of the Legends from the past and the amount of times they all finished the Memory Work. Maxwell has set a new Btln record with 5 years and GeRRald has tied 4 Btln Legends with 4 years! Congrats guys, we here at the blog salute you!

MAYLONG 2013!

So many good things happened this year at the Maylong! I am not sure were to start! The Memory Work is the most important thing that we do at Battalion so why not start there! Noah Makortoff and Jake Hachey both finished the Memory Work for the first time! Congrats to both Noah and Jake! Jake is the first graduated Btln Member (That I know of) to finish the Memory Work! (Jake is starting a new tradition!) Jonathan Fojt and Ben Nicolson also finished the Memory Work this weekend! So excited about the guys that have finished the Memory Work!

Psalm 119:9-11  How can a young man stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

The weather Friday was great! Setting up was easy in the dry weather! As soon as we were set up the guys started playing Apple Toss! George was playing anyone who was willing! George added a new twist, an Onion! Yes, George and Jason played Onion Toss!

Friday Night the Alumni played Poker. Jason had an early lead but was defeated by Aaron! Good poker and good times! So stoked to be hanging out with the Alumni! Some of the Alumni did a lot of driving to come camping with us! Tyler from Merritt, Devin from Lethbridge, David from Delta and Evan from Edmonton! That is a combined 2477 Kilometers! Thanks for spending your Maylong with us!

Saturday the rain came! It rained from early morning until around 3 in the afternoon! Once the rain stopped some of the guys went out fishing and some of us went out tubing! George, Austin, John, Maxwell, Jonathan and Cam all went tubing! Jeremy went wakeboarding! The water wasn't real warm but is was warmer than the air!

The Crib Tourney was played most of Saturday. 24 guys ( I think) competed in the Tourney. In the end it was Maxwell and Luke playing two former Champions, Aaron and the Captain! Aaron and I won the first game. Max and Luke won the second game setting up a third game, winner takes all! The third was close halfway through until both Aaron and I both got monster hands to put the game away! Congrats Aaron!

Cribbage Tourney Champions
2006 - Cam Thompson, Taylor Wollenberg-Barron
2007 - David Podovinikoff, Abe Martens
2008 - Lance Martens, Abe Martens
2009 - Derek Brown, Jim Ridsdale
2010 - Zane Lawson, Aaron Friesen
2011 - David Podovinikoff, Eli Podovinikoff
2012 - Devin Chursinoff, Eli Podovinikoff
2013 - Aaron Friesen, Lance Martens

There was more Poker on Saturday after Crib as well as some Risk! (Risk it for a Biscuit!) Jason avenged his loss on Friday night by winning Poker on Saturday!

I forgot to mention the 2nd Annual Maylong Regatta! Because of the rain most guys didn't spend as much time building their boats this year but that didn't stop us! Tyler had the weiner boat and Devin built a paddle wheeler! (Devin was too late to enter the Regatta) My Regatta highlight was watching Noah run down the creek with his boat! Alex was the winner of the Regatta! Congrats Alex!

Plans are already in the works for Maylong 2014! Can't wait! May 16-18, 2014! The Maylong is only 361 days away!

BTLN UPDATE - LAST NIGHT

Another Last Night is in the books! I can't believe that the year is already over! Congrats to GeRRald, Austin and Max on a great finish to the Winston Championship! (More on that later!)

So many guys showed up, it was amazing! The night started with Murderball. Ben's team took the first two games but my team battled back to tie the score 2-2! The final game went to Ben's team giving Ben bragging rights for the summer!

Next we brought out the 9 foot party sub from Subway! Which the guys devoured!

The Btln Grad ceremonies were next. We gave Jordan, Cody, GeRRald, Austin, Dan D and Dart a Study Bible. (Study being the key word here guys!) The guys also got a Btln dog tag and a copy of the Hebrew saying.(In English.) After they guys read the saying they ate the paper, as per tradition!

The traditional group photo, cake(made by Maxwell)and then on to Bulldog! Austin sacrificed himself early so that he could take out GeRRald and Max. Landon had lots of help early making it easier to take out some of the other bigger guys. Cody Harp took the last Helmet of the year and the last of his Btln career!(Sad isn't it?) Congrats Cody! This was Cody's second Helmet of the year!

With the tie in the Winston standings we needed a tiebreaker for the first time ever! The Football Toss was a tough test with everyone watching. There were only two footballs that hit the target! Austin hitting 1 for 5 and both GeRRald and Max going 0 for 5. Max graciously bowed out of the tiebreaker, setting up a final tiebreaker between Austin and GeRRald! The final tiebreaker was a best of three Box Hockey tourney! (I love Box Hockey!) Austin dominated and won the first game taking the lead 1-0. GeRRald battled back in the second spending most of the game in Austin's end. GeRRald got the win in the second game tying the series 1-1. GeRRald dominated the last game taking the win, the tiebreaker and Winston! Congrats GeRRald you are a worthy Champion! Austin and GeRRald were both great sports and put on an amazing show!

The Memory Work is still our priority at Btln and this week Luke Martens finished the Memory Work! Congrats Luke! Luke is only the second grade seven ever to complete the Memory Work!(Max was the first!) Noah Makortoff is also getting close to completing the Memory Work! Actually so is Jake Hachey! So stoked about the guys doing the Memory Work!

We gave Winston to GeRRald, we prayed and then the night and the year were both over!(Almost over.)

The grade eleven's and twelve's, Btln Leaders and Alumni went to the Station for the Last Night Afterparty! More food and good times! (The grads received there Btln Medallions at the Afterparty!) And then the night (Last Night) was truly over!

Thanks to all the guys that came out!

Thanks to all the leaders that have helped throughout the year! Ben, Jason, Nathan B, Jake, Zach and Nathan K! Without your help we could not have had Btln this year!

Thanks to Max for the amazing cake!

Thanks to Sam and Jeff for your help in the kitchen!

Thanks also to Tyler Francis for coming out this week, it is awesome when Alumni can come out on a Wednesday Night!

Next up is the May Long Campout!

WINSTON STANDINGS

There is only one week left at Btln and we have a three way tie for first in the Winston Standings! Max, GeRRald and Austin are all tied for first! This has never happened before so we had to come up with a tie-breaker. This is our solution. (Although if one of these three were able to win Bulldog this week we wouldn't need the tiebreaker.)

The guys will play one three way game of Football Toss with the top two scores moving on to a best of three Box Hockey game for the Winston Championship! Good luck guys!

BTLN BIBLES

One of the traditions of Last Night is giving the Btln Grads a Bible. Such an honor and a privilege to be able to give these Bibles to our Grads! So great to see these guys grow up and so sad to see them go! Last Night is so bittersweet!

BTLN UPDATE

Congrats Landon! This is Landon's first career Helmet! That first win is soo sweet! I am predicting that this won't be Landon's last Helmet. Could Landon be in the running for Winston next year? Only time will tell!

The night started with Menno on the bbq and Gatorade! Not sure how many Menno dogs were eaten this week but between this week and two weeks ago I'm sure that Btln 3739 collectively consumed one pig!

Football has always been the sport of choice at Btln 3739 in the spring, but the times they are a changing! Half of the guys wanted to play football and the other half wanted to play soccer. So this week we decided to play soccer at one end of the field and football at the other end! This actually worked well. Most of the younger guys played soccer while the grade elevens and twelves played football. This gave me the chance to get some revenge on the J-man for beating my team two weeks ago! We actually tried playing tackle football which turned out to be a bad idea. Oh well, I guess once in a while we need a reminder why we play touch football at Btln! The game was tied 21-21 so we had to go to overtime. Jason's team was first with the ball but was unable to score with four downs from the twenty yard line. Next my team had our chance and on first down Austin scored to give us the win 28-21!  The young guys played soccer and it looked like a good time, Jake and Zach lead the way. The soccer game ended in a 3-3 tie.

In Bible study this week we tried to wrap up our year long series "The History of the World" or "His Story".

We talked about how Jesus was at the beginning of the history of the world as the Creator.

Colossians 1:15-17  The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Jesus didn't just create the world, he also holds it all together! And then when man sinned he didn't just sit back and watch us all perish, he was willing to sacrifice himself for us!

Colossians 2:13-14  When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

Jesus' death and resurrection is at the heart or center of the history of the world. All history revolves around what Jesus did for us at the cross!

Romans 6:6-7  For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

Jesus has set us free from sin!

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Jesus will be there at the end of the world, to take us to heaven so that we can be with him forever!

Revelation 1:8  “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Next week is Last Night! Don't miss the 9 foot party sub from Subway! Spread the word!

BTLN UPDATE

Congrats Spenny! This was Spencer's second Helmet of the 2012/13 Btln season! Spenny's first Helmet of the year was back on First Night! (One more Helmet earlier in the season and Spenny would have been in the mix for Winston!) GeRRald was with Spenny at the end but Austin and Max were not going to let GeRRald take sole possession of first place in the race for Winston!

When I was buying the Menno for Pop n Dogs this week I was wondering if 64 Menno dogs was going to be too much, but Btln 3739 did not let me down! We had a bunch of guys show up this week and they all brought their appetite! All 64 dogs were gone by the end of the night and so was 18 liters of Gatorade! I was so proud!

The last couple of years the scoring has been down when we play football, most games ending 7-0 or 14-7. This week we tried several different ways to increase scoring. In my quest to better the game I was over thinking the problem and made things too difficult. In the end we just shortened the field (We played half the field) and added one more down.(five for the field) When it was time to end, the score was tied 14-14. We decided to go to a C.F.L. style overtime, each team with 3 downs from the ten yard line. Jason's team went first and scored easily on first down! It was my team's turn next and on second down I threw an interception to give Jason's team the 21-14 victory!

This week we had a special guest speaker! Al Martens, the 4th Sergeant of Battalion 3739 (1984/85 and 1985/86) led the Bible study this week! I asked Al to talk about The Resurrection.

1 Corinthians 15:20-22  But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
Philippians 3:20,21  But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Al pointed out the fact that because of Jesus' resurrection we could look forward to a life after death in a new glorious body that will be like Jesus'!

1 Peter 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

Not only will we be raised to life in our new and glorious bodies we will also receive an inheritance!

Romans 6:1-7  What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

Lastly Al showed us that because of Jesus' resurrection we can live a new life and no longer need to be a slave to sin! How great is our God! We no longer need to be ruled by sin!

1 Corinthians 10:13  No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

Thanks to Al for preparing the Bible study! Thanks also to Jason who helped clean up the mess after Pop n Dogs!

Next week is 8th annual Btln Masters! We meet at the church at 6:45 p.m. and will be leaving for Cascade Par 3 at 7:00 p.m.! Don't be late!

HAPPY EASTER!

Happy Easter! Ben suggested on Wednesday night that we should all take the time to read about Jesus' death and resurrection this Easter. It was such a fantastic idea that I decided that I should remind us! Here is were you can read about Jesus' death and resurrection.

Matthew chapters 26-28
Mark chapters 14-16
Luke chapters 22-24
John chapters 18-21

Read one or read all four, just take time to remember what Jesus did for you!

1 Timothy 1:15a Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.

BTLN UPDATE

Congrats Luke! This is Luke's second Helmet of the 2012/13 Btln season! Max and Austin had a glorious chance to pull ahead of GeRRald this week. Even with GeRRald out of town they were unable to win the much coveted fourth Helmet! Luke kept his Winston hopes alive with his win! Congrats Luke!

The new Btln Hoodies were ready this week and they look amazing! Ben, Jason and Bruce made us another Btln Classic! I think there might be a few left! Get in touch with Ben or Jason if you are interested!

The night started with Fumble, it is a game that looks intimidating at first, but once you realize that most of us have terrible aim the fear of being hit quickly disappears. Although, it is surprising how few fumbles there are when the guys are worried about making a mistake! Most of the guys were loving Fumble, it is a game we will have to play more in the future!

Now that we are nearing the end of the year and have played most of the games many times we decided to mix things up a little. This week we played the Btln Trifecta but this time the three games were Soccer(with two balls), Handball(also with two balls) and Extreme Bulldog! I wasn't sure how the soccer would turn out but it was actually alot of fun! Ben's team winning 3-1. (It was very obvious that I am not a Soccer goalie!) Next we played Handball but this time it was my team winning 3-1! With the Trifecta tied 1-1 it was time to move onto Extreme Bulldog! John Van started in the middle for my team and Parker Steadman started in the middle for Ben's team! (That's not a typo, it really was Parker!) My team usually doesn't win Extreme Bulldog (Or the Trifecta.) but this week John was a beast! John got smacked in the mouth and kept on battling! John lead my team to victory in Extreme Bulldog giving us the 2-1 win in the Btln Trifecta!

Our theme in Bible Study this year has been "The History of the World" or "His Story". This week with Ben leading us we moved into the New Testament and onto the Easter story. ( Matthew 26:47-56, Matthew 27:11-66, Matthew 28:1-10)

Matthew 26:50-54  Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.” Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?”

Sometimes we need to be reminded that God doesn't need our help! Jesus didn't want or need Peter(The one with the sword) or twelve legions of angels to help him. Jesus was and is the only one who totally understands God's plans that are written for us in the Scriptures. Jesus was the only one that knew that he would have to die for our sins!

Matthew 27:12-14  When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

Why didn't Jesus respond to the false charges? The truth is, Jesus was taking our place and because of this he was taking our guilt!

Matthew 27:22-24  “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered, “Crucify him!” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”

Pilate's response is the same as most. He didn't realize that Jesus was going to the cross to pay for his (Pilate's) sins! We were all guilty before God. This is why Jesus had to die!

Matthew 27:38-44  Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

Jesus was dying for those that mocked him! It is hard to imagine!

Luke 23:44-46  It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.

Jesus looked like he had been defeated! Did he need those angels after all? Three days later Jesus rose from the grave in victory!

Colossians 2:13-15  When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
