THE XVI BTLN 3739 PING PONG TOURNEY

I figured that we should start Btln 3739 Ping Pong week with a look back at last years results. With Zane out of the way it looks like Jordan, Gerrald, Zach and Tristan are the front runners. Could there be a dark horse out there that will take the trophy? Only time will tell.

BTLN UPDATE

Cody has been so close so many times, this time he would not be denied! Congrats Cody! First Helmet of the season!

This week it was the Btln Trifecta! We started with Handball and my team jumped out to an early lead, it was 4-1. It seemed like we let off a little and before we knew it the score was 6-6! It was next goal wins and it didn't take long for Jeremy and Joe's team to complete the comeback! Ben and the Captain's team 6 - Jeremy and Joe's team 7. Next it was Murderball. We split the first two games, the score 1-1. The third and deciding game was close but in the end it was Jeremy and Joe's team again taking the victory! winning the Trifecta 2-0.(No need for the third leg(Extreme Bulldog)of the Trifecta.

This week in our continuing series "Entrust to Reliable Men" we took a closer look at Peter.
(Matthew 4:18-20, Matthew 14:22-33, Matthew 16:13-17, Matthew 17:1-9, John 18:1-11, John 21:1-8, Acts 4:1-22, Acts 5:17-42)

Matthew 4:18-20 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

Joe and I were talking about this passage. Imagine dropping everything to follow Jesus! There was no delay in Peter's response. He was immediately all in! We don't need to drop everything like Peter did, but we need to put Jesus first like Peter! We also need to be fishers of Men like Peter!

John 21:1-8 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?” “No,” they answered. He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.

Peter could not wait for the boat to get to the shore! We need to be this desperate to spend time with Jesus! Do we make time to read our Bibles and to pray? Jesus is waiting for us just like he was for Peter.

Acts 4:18-20 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

Acts 5:41-42 The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.

Not only was Peter desperate to spend time with Jesus, he was also desperate to share Jesus!("We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.") Peter was willing to endure persecution to get the message out!
Imagine if we were all this desperate to share Jesus!

Last up was Bulldog. Jordan started in the middle and it didn't take long for him to take down most of the bigger guys! If we kept records for the quickest Bulldog games(The lowest round total.) it would have been close! It was amazing! In the end Cody Harp took the Helmet and the Yorkie! Congrats Cody!

Next week is the 17th Annual Btln Ping Pong Tourney!

BTLN UPDATE

Time again for an update! First off, sorry that this is late!(I was at YQ!) Congrats to Jordan on his third Helmet of the 2011/12 Btln season! Jordan is now tied for second place!

This week we played Murderball! (We haven't played Murderball enough in the second half.) The teams were closely matched and the series was 2-1 for Ben's team when we played one of those marathon games that seemed like it was not going to end. It went back and forth, but in the end Ben's team outlasted us winning the series 3-1.(We were totally gassed!)

In Bible study we took a look at Paul in our continuing series "Entrust to Reliable Men". (Acts 16:16-34, 2 Corinthians 11:24-28)
We read about Paul's sufferings in 2 Corinthians and about the time Paul and Silas went to prison in Philippi for freeing a slave girl from an evil spirit.

Acts 16:23-25 After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. When he received these orders, he put them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

What an amazing reaction to a terrible situation! They were severely flogged, put in stocks and now they are praying and singing to God?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Romans 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Ephesians 5:19,20 Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!

Paul lived according to these passages! It didn't matter what situation he was in! How could he do this?

Philippians 1:21-24 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.

To live is Christ and to die is gain! What an amazing statement! To Paul, Christ was the only thing to live and die for! What a Reliable Man of God!

The night ended with a sweet game of Bulldog! Zach was in the middle to start and he had plans to help Noah win Bulldog. Noah did make the final with Jordan but we had a controversial end. We had Noah and Jordan go to the bonus round and Jordan pulled out another big win! Congrats Jordan!

d-Pod made a special appearance! Thanks for coming out! (Love it when the Alumni show up!)

MEMORY WORK UPDATE

There are 97 days left to finish the Memory Work and 155 days until Creation 2012! There is plenty of time left! Get to work memorizing! Jonathan didn't start memorizing until March last year and he still got it done! (I don't recommend this, give yourself as much time as is possible!) Anyways here is were everyone is at right now.

MEMORY WORK TOTALS
BEN NICHOLSON - 97 points
GERRALD NICHOLSON - 87 points
NATHAN KLASSEN - 87 points
CODY HARP - 75 points
MAXWELL NICHOLSON - 45 points
JONATHAN FOJT - 45 points
LUKE BOSCHMAN - 45 points

Keep up the good work!

Ben is leading the way and this is his first time!

BTLN UPDATE - MIKE NIGHT

First off congrats to Zach on his sixth Helmet of the 2011/12 Btln season! Zach has now tied the record set by Sam Schiesser and tied by Chris Henderson. Zach has two months to beat the record! Congrats Zach, you deserve the record! You earned it!

In Bible study Ben talked about Timothy and his relationship with Paul in our continuing series "Entrust to Reliable Men". (1 Timothy and 2 Timothy)

Ben talked about how Paul mentored Timothy and how we all need older friends to mentor us as well. This is our goal at Battalion!

2 Timothy 1:2-14 To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. So do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner. Rather, join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God. He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher. That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.
What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

This whole passage is full of Paul's advice to Timothy. ("I remind you you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you.")("Join with me in suffering for the gospel.")(What you have heard from me, keep as a pattern of sound teaching.)

This is the kind of friend we all need!

2 Timothy 2:1-3 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

More good advice from Paul to Timothy!(Where have I heard this passage before?)

Mike is always a classic. We had four teams of four and the game was close. After a few collisions and even more battles we had our winner, it was Zach's team! The guy hardly ever loses! The scores were 24-22-22-21.

We ended with Bulldog and like I said before, Zach was our winner! Congrats Zach!

BTLN UPDATE

Another week is in the books! First off congrats to T-Square on his second Helmet in the last 4 weeks! T-Square is on a roll!

This week we played Handball. Early on it looked like my team was going to easily take the win but Joe and Ben's team stormed back to win 9-7. I think that my team let up a little and couldn't get it back.(Prevent defense anyone?)

In the Bible study this week we took a look at Jonathan in our continuing series "Entrust to Reliable Men". (1 Samuel 14:1-14, 19:1-7, 20:1-42, 23:15-18)
Jonathan was a Reliable friend and very trustworthy. Even though Jonathan knew that David was going to take his throne he was alright with it. Most men would not be ok with their best friend taking their inheritance! Not only was Jonathan ok with it but he also stood up for David when his dad (King Saul) wanted to kill David. Jonathan almost died because of his loyalty to David.(King Saul threw his spear at Jonathan.)

1 Samuel 23:15-18 While David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that Saul had come out to take his life. And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this.” The two of them made a covenant before the Lord. Then Jonathan went home, but David remained at Horesh.

This is the kind of friend we all need! Jonathan helped David find strength in God! Jonathan knew God's will(regarding the kingdom of Israel)and he was going to follow it rather than fight it like his dad King Saul!

We ended the night with Bulldog and in the end it was Tristan outlasting Zach for his second Helmet of the season! Congrats Tristan!

Congrats also to Luke! Luke has brought five friends and got his 20 dollar gift card from D.Q.! Thanks Luke, you are making a difference!

Mike Night next week! Bring a friend!

NATHAN IS THE CHAMP!

Congrats to Nathan on his Winterslam win! We are never sure how the Btln Majors will end, but it is usually exciting and tonight was no exception!
The Lightweight division was first with Jonathan and Dylan each winning in the first round. Dylan and Jon battled hard in the second and final round of the Lightweight Division, with Jonathan taking the win and the Lightweight Division crown! Congrats Jonathan!
Next up were the Heavyweights. There were four first round matches and all four had good battles but some better than the others. Zach and Tristan had a battle that seemed to last forever. It went back and forth, both were totally exhausted but in the end it was Zach taking his match in the first round. Stevie took his first round match with some help from Dan D. who took a knee? Really, not sure why. Nathan took his first round match and Cody dropped Dartagnan real hard to advance to the final round. Cody was the first to go in the second round, he seemed to be the target, I guess they were worried about him. Stevie was next. Nathan and Zach teamed up and it wasn't long before we were down to the final two. Zach has owned Battalion 3739 this year but at Winterslam Nathan was not going to be denied! It was a tough battle but it seemed as if Zach was still feeling the effects of his earlier battle with Tristan. Nathan dealing the final blow that would knock Zach down and give him the win and the Belt!

Thanks to all the guys that came out and competed!

Thanks also to Jeremy, Aaron, Joe, Owen, Ben and Jake for all your help! It doesn't go unnoticed!

Again, Congrats to Nathan Klassen, Winterslam 7 Champion! Congrats also to Jonathan Fojt, Lightweight Division Champion!

WINTERSLAM 7

Yes it is time again for Winterslam! Can't believe that it has been seven years! Seven years for the boxing ring and seven years for the belt! In the six previous years we have only had one back to back Champion, Steven Feenstra! This year will see another new Winterslam Champion. Seven years ago we added Winterslam, The Royal Rumble and The Masters to the Btln Olympics and the Btln Ping Pong Tourney to bring our Btln Majors total up to five. In the last six years only one Btln Member has been able to win more than two Btln Majors in one Btln Season. In 2005/06 Ben Jepsen won the Btln Olympics, The Royal Rumble and Winterslam. This year Zach Gobbett has a chance to tie Ben's record for most Btln Majors in one season! Zach has already won the Btln Olympics and The Royal Rumble. Can Zach win his third Btln Major or will someone else take the belt? Nathan, GeRRald or Cody? Or will someone else step it up?

WINTERSLAM CHAMPIONS
2006 - Ben Jepsen
2007 - Devin Chursinoff
2008 - Steven Feenstra
2009 - Steven Feenstra
2010 - Sam Schiesser
2011 - Kaleb Horkoff

Remember to be early (6:50 p.m. Wednesday night) and bring a friend!

BTLN UPDATE - U.F.O. ?

This week was very unconventional for Btln 3739. It is not very often that we do anything that could be considered a craft but this week we made hot air balloons! It is hard to know how well the balloons will turn out but they worked really well and the first balloon was amazing! It was so high that it was only a spec in the sky! (U.F.O. sighting in G.F.!)

At the beginning of the night we started with a game of fumble. Fumble is always good for a few laughs. It seems like it is always the same people that end up against the wall.(George, Luke and the Captain. I took two shots to the body!)
GeRRald has been pushing me to play a video collage of pictures from Creation 2011 and this week we finally got it together.(Sometimes the Captain needs to be pushed.)Thanks to Bent for putting that fabulous video together! If that video doesn't convince anyone to go to Creation then nothing will!(Did I mention that the O.C. Supertones will be at Creation 2012? So pumped!)

It was Jeremy's turn to lead the Bible study and this week he had us take a look at Caleb in our continuing series "Entrust to Reliable Men".(Numbers 13:1-33, Numbers 14:1-24, Joshua 14:6-15)
Caleb was one of twelve spies sent by Moses to spy on Canaan.(A spy, very cool! He must have been very courageous!) When the spies came back and gave their report to Moses and the rest of the nation, Caleb and Joshua were the only ones that trusted God and gave a good report. After seeing the plagues in Egypt and the parting of the Red Sea it should have been easy to trust God. This is human nature to want to do things ourselves. Caleb and Joshua knew that with God's help that anything is possible!

Numbers 13:30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it."

Numbers 14:6-8 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into the land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us.

Philippians 4:13 I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Bulldog was again the finale of the night. Because we didn't play any other rough games it seemed like we had extra aggression that we had not burned earlier in the night. Tristan took GeRRald down real hard and there were a few other big collisions. In the end though it came down to Cody and Zach. These guys battled alone for about four or five rounds and in the end Zach pulled out his fifth Helmet of the season! On the last round as Cody was going down he tackled Zach and was going to roll over Zach for the win but was unable to. If he would have pulled it off it would have been amazing! Zach is one Helmet win away from tying the record for most Helmets in one Btln season! Congrats Zach!

Next week is The Btln Winterslam!(Boxing)

Remember, Battalion is like Heaven, there is always room for one more! So bring a friend!

BTLN UPDATE

T-Square!!! Tristan has been so close so many times this year and now finally he has broken through and has his first Helmet of the Btln season! Should be the first of many!
Gym football was the game this week! The timing, accuracy and speed required to play football in the gym is more like pro ball than any other football that we play at Btln. Jeremy's team scored on their first drive taking an early lead. My team tried to battle back, coming close a couple of times but were unable to score for the entire game. Jeremy did not score again, the final was 7-0. (The season series is now the Captain 7 and Jeremy 7.)
In Bible study we looked at King Solomon in our series "Entrust to Reliable Men".(1 Kings 3:3-15)
The Lord came to Solomon in a dream and said "Ask for whatever you want me to give you."(verse 4) I'm not sure what I would have asked for but Solomon's choice was amazing!

1 Kings 3:9a Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.

Obviously God is pleased with Solomon's answer.

1 Kings 3:12-13 "I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for-both wealth and honor-so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings."

Solomon's walk with God started so strong! Those gifts that God gave Solomon helped him at first but soon he became arrogant and he forgot that it was God that gave him everything that he had!

Near the end of his life Solomon writes about some of the choices he made in his life in the book of Ecclesiastes.

Ecclesiastes 2:10-11 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in my in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labour. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.

This would be a sad end but Solomon's final conclusion was this.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.

If we make this last passage our goal we can truly be Reliable Men of God!

The night ended with Bulldog and like Maxwell said "Tristan deserved to win!" He was almost stopped a couple of times but was not to be denied!

Almost forgot to mention that I seperated my finger but was able to put it back in place! It looked really strange!

Two weeks until Winterslam!

BTLN UPDATE

Congrats Max!! Max won his first career Helmet!!!!!! I'm sure that GeRRald has been hearing about it all week!!!! It is always a big deal to win the Helmet, but there is nothing like winning it for the first time!!!
This week we played the Btln Trifecta! We started with Murderball and this time it wasn't even close! The J-Man was in town and his team handed it to Jeremy and Joe's team! The best of seven ended 4-0! Next up was Handball and it wasn't much better, ending 7-3 again for the J-Man! There was no need to play the third leg of the Trifecta, the J-Man winning the Trifecta 2-0! (I was on the J-Man's team, the season series is now the Captain 7 and Jeremy 6!)

This week we got back into our series "Entrust to Reliable Men". This time around it was Joseph.(Genesis 37 and 39) In this series we always try to find something about these men to emulate. With Joseph it was his ability to conqueror and avoid temptation.(With God's help of course.) Joseph knew that if he gave in to temptation that it was his relationship with God that would suffer.

Genesis 39:9 "No one is greater in this house than I am. My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?"

When the temptation became too much, Joseph did what we all need to do when temptation becomes more than we can handle. He ran from it!

Genesis 39:12 She caught him by the cloak and said, "Come to bed with me!" But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.

The temptation of Jesus is another good example of how to handle temptation. (Luke 4:1-13, Hebrews 4:15,16) Jesus quotes scripture to avoid temptation.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Psalm 119:9-11 How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

We ended with Bulldog and yes Maxwell was our winner!!!!
